Have you ever found yourself asking, "God, why am I here?"

Perhaps you've done everything you believe God has asked of you. You've stepped out in faith, obeyed His leading, and trusted His direction - only to find yourself facing what feels like a dead end.

The Israelites knew exactly what that felt like.

After centuries of slavery, God miraculously rescued His people from Egypt. He led them by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night, making His presence unmistakably clear. But instead of taking the quickest route to freedom, God deliberately led them to the edge of the Red Sea, with mountains surrounding them and Pharaoh's army rapidly approaching from behind.

From a human perspective, it looked like a mistake.

But God's plans are rarely limited by what we can see.

Protection Over Convenience

Scripture tells us there was a shorter route to the Promised Land, but God intentionally avoided it because His people weren't yet ready for the battles they would face.

The shortest path wasn't the safest path.

How often do we pray for the quickest solution, the immediate breakthrough, or the open door? Yet God sometimes chooses protection over convenience. What feels like a delay may actually be His grace at work, keeping us from something we cannot yet see.

Just as a loving parent pulls a child back from running into traffic, God sometimes holds us back because He sees the bigger picture.

When the Fire Moves

One of the most remarkable moments in Exodus 14 is when the pillar of fire changes position.

Until that moment, God's presence had been leading Israel forward. But when Pharaoh's army drew near, the pillar moved behind them, standing between God's people and their enemies.

To the Israelites, it may have seemed as though God had disappeared.

In reality, He hadn't left them at all.

The God who had been guiding them was now protecting them.

Sometimes we experience seasons where God's leading feels less obvious than before. We wonder if He's still working because we can't clearly see what's next. Yet what feels like God's silence may actually be His protection.

Before God made a way through the sea, He became the wall behind His people.

Stand Before You See the Miracle

As fear spread through the camp, Moses gave Israel a simple instruction:

"Do not be afraid. Stand firm."

Standing doesn't always mean doing nothing.

It means refusing to give in to fear while trusting that God is still at work.

The sea didn't part immediately. Throughout the night, God worked while His people waited. The miracle came in His timing, not theirs.

We often want immediate answers, but faith is frequently formed in the waiting.

The New Testament echoes this same call. In Ephesians 6, Paul repeatedly tells believers to stand - not in their own strength, but clothed in the armour of God. Victory isn't always about charging forward; sometimes it's about refusing to surrender the ground Christ has already won.

Waiting Is Preparation

Moses understood waiting.

Before God used him to lead a nation, Moses spent forty years in the wilderness. What looked like wasted time was actually preparation.

God wasn't finished with him.

The same is true for us.

The waiting seasons in our lives are rarely empty. God shapes our character, deepens our faith, and prepares us for what lies ahead. The breakthrough we long for often requires the preparation we would rather avoid.

Trust the Fire

Looking back, many of us can identify moments that felt like disappointments at the time but later revealed themselves as God's protection.

Closed doors.Delayed answers.Unexpected detours.

What if those weren't interruptions to God's plan?

What if they were His plan?

The Israelites couldn't see the miracle until they chose to trust the One who was leading them.

And neither can we.

If you find yourself in a season where the way forward isn't clear, don't assume God has abandoned you. The fire may simply have moved.

The God who leads you is also the God who protects you, prepares you, and fights for you.

So stand firm.

Trust Him before you see the sea open.
