For Such a Time as This: Bold and Courageous Decisions

I grew up a little confused about my heritage. My family wore denim like it was our formal attire—black jeans were “number ones,” and any other pair was for everyday life. On Heritage Day, when our daughter had to dress up for school, I found myself unsure what to put her in.

Instead of buying a cultural outfit that didn’t feel authentic to us, I dressed her in a little dress, placed a tiara on her head, and hung a sign around her neck that read:

“I am a daughter of the King. My heritage is in heaven.”

She loved it—what little girl wouldn’t? But when I shared this with my Christian colleagues, they were horrified. “How embarrassing,” one said.

I couldn’t help but respond: “Are we not children of God? Is she not a daughter of the King? Is heaven not our true home? Why would I be ashamed of this heritage?”

That moment reminded me that my truest heritage is not in my family line, culture, or history—it’s in Christ.

Citizens of Heaven

Romans 8:14-17 tells us that those led by the Spirit of God are children of God. We are not slaves bound in fear, but sons and daughters adopted into God’s family. We are co-heirs with Christ.

That means heaven is our home, and Jesus is the only name we need to gain access to it. No passport, no visa, no proving our worth. Just His name.

I was reminded of this recently while applying for a British visa. I’m already a British citizen, but the process was nerve-wracking—fingerprints, photos, interviews. I was sweating, anxious I might somehow forget my own name! Yet the irony was this: the only reason I belonged in that kingdom was because of my father’s name, not anything I did.

It’s the same with heaven. You don’t get in because of your record, achievements, or background. You belong because of Jesus.

Esther’s Bold Choice

God has been speaking to me through the story of Esther. She was an orphan, an outsider, and yet God positioned her as queen “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). When faced with the possibility of losing her people, she had a choice: stay comfortable in the palace, or step into God’s calling at great risk.

Her words still echo with courage: “If I perish, I perish.”

It would have been easy for Esther to remain silent, but she understood something vital—her comfort was never the goal. Her position was an assignment.

Likewise, God reminds me: don’t settle. Don’t get too comfortable with what’s working, with what feels safe. There are always more people who need to know Jesus. The church was never meant to settle—it was called to advance.

Go Time

At the start of the year, our church had a phrase: “On your marks, get set… slow.” But I believe it’s time to shift: it’s go time.

God is looking for people who will make bold and courageous decisions. For some of us, it won’t mean saying, “If I perish, I perish.” But it might mean:

  • If I’m embarrassed, I’m embarrassed.

  • If I’m uncomfortable, I’m uncomfortable.

  • If I’m stretched, I’m stretched.

The mission of the church was never to be cozy and safe—it was to be unstoppable. God doesn’t hand us a ten-step plan. He asks us to take the first step, then promises to meet us with everything we need.

Esther could have stayed silent. Instead, she said yes. And because of that, God’s people were saved.

Now it’s our turn.

Closing Thought

God is King. He has a kingdom. And He invites us, His children, to participate. We can choose to say no, but what a privilege to say yes.

You were born for such a time as this.

It’s go time.
